Gills enquire about Millwall defender

Millwall manager Kenny Jackett has confirmed Gillingham have made an enquiry about their central defender Darren Ward.

The 33 year old former Wolves, Crystal Palace and Watford defender has spent the past two seasons back at the New Den having played for Millwall between 2001 and 2005.

However, he is deemed to be regarded more as a fringe player now by manager Kenny Jackett with the Millwall boss confirming that Gillingham manager Martin Allen had made an enquiry abour his availability, along with several other players.

Ward would add the necessary experience Allen is looking for at the back with Andy Frampton, Connor Essam and Callum Davies his only central defenders to have any league experience.

Since the departure of both Simon King and Garry Richards at the end of last season, Gillingham have looked short in central defence and Ward would fit the bill for Allen as both an experienced leader on and off the pitch, but also as a player who is vocal during games.

Meanwhile, Gillingham have been linked with a whole variety of names as Allen looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the new season.

Notts County striker Lee Hughes is one name that has been linked with a move to Priestfield, however some fans have already stated their discontent at bringing in the veteran forward.
